The following people can ride-along:

• Albemarle County residents 16 years of age or older
• ACPD applicants
• Albemarle County employees and interns
• College students

Every attempt will be made to accommodate interested persons; however, any applicant may be disqualified without cause.

Disqualifying factors include, but are not limited to the following:

• Individuals under 16 years of age
• Prior criminal history
• Pending criminal action
• Pending lawsuit against the County and/or ACPD

• Complete the Application Form and Waiver

Forms must be signed in the presence of an ACPD employee prior to submission.

A parent or legal guardian’s signature will be required for all applicants under the age of 18.

All forms should be personally delivered to the ACPD (1600 5th Street Extended, Suite D, Charlottesville, Virginia 22902).

Completed forms must be submitted at least 14 days prior to the requested ride-along date.

Please bring a valid driver’s license and/or photo ID when submitting your application.

A member of the ACPD will call you to schedule your ride-along. Due to the high volume of applications, it may take up to two weeks before you receive a call.

Participants are required to dress in casual business attire during their ride-along. Jeans, cut-off shorts, cargo pants, t-shirts and open toe shoes are not permitted. Acceptable forms of clothing include the following:

• Business slacks or khaki pants
• Skirt or dress
• Collared shirt (including polo)
• Blouse
• Sweater
• Closed toe shoes (including tennis shoes)

• Participants may take part in one (1) ride-along per year.
• Duration of the ride along is four (4) hours but can be extended on a case-by-case basis.
• Participants are responsible for any personal expenses they incur during the ride-along.
• Participants must always remain inside the police vehicle unless instructed to exit by a police officer.
• Participants are not allowed to photograph, video record, or tape record any events or persons.
• Participants are not permitted to carry weapons, concealed or otherwise.
• Participants are not permitted to carry restraining devices of any kind.
• Participants may be required to provide sworn statements and/or testify in court.
• Participants may not ride with officers they are friends with and/or related to.
