Albemarle County’s Planning Division is leading an update of the County’s Comprehensive Plan. This plan will set priorities and serve as a guide for future physical development of Albemarle County.

This Comprehensive Plan update is an opportunity to incorporate our community’s recent work, better understand the diverse, lived experiences of Albemarle County community members, and plan for an equitable and resilient future.

Why update the Plan?

Comprehensive Plans typically outline a vision for a 20-year planning horizon, with periodic updates required by State Code.

Updates to the Comp Plan offer the opportunity to integrate new plans and policies, and to plan for future growth and demands for infrastructure and services. Since the latest Comprehensive Plan update in 2015, Albemarle County has grown and changed. Several new plans and policies have been adopted by the County (including the Climate Action Plan and the Affordable Housing Policy). Additionally, the Board of Supervisors affirmed Albemarle County's commitment to equity and inclusion with the Resolution in Support of an Equitable and Inclusive Community.

Since 2015, approximately 4,000 new dwelling units have been built and our community’s median household income and median home values continue to rise. This growth, however, has not been experienced evenly across the County, with quality-of-life outcomes that differ depending on where you live in Albemarle County. Read the Albemarle County Equity Profile to learn more.

Why is it called AC44?

This name celebrates the shared future that we will be working to shape by the year 2044.

Join Albemarle County staff online for our fourth AC44 Lunch & Learn event on Thursday, April 24, from 12-1 pm. We’ll start with a brief presentation followed by an extended Q&A period. The presentation will focus on two chapters: Housing and Community Facilities. Community members will learn more about the following:

  • How we are planning for and encouraging a variety of housing options: Learn about the topics addressed in the Housing chapter and how this chapter relates to Housing Albemarle, the County's housing policy.
  • How the County and partner agencies and organizations plan for equitable and cost-effective services and facilities, consistent with the Growth Management Policy: Learn about how we plan for the needs of current and future community members, including for public water and sewer, public schools, solid waste, and libraries.
  • Overarching Goal, Objectives, and Actions for both chapters: Learn what we want our community to be like in 2044, what we need to achieve to get there, and how we will implement the Comp Plan.
  • Future Engagement and Feedback Opportunities: Understand how to stay engaged and provide feedback on the Comprehensive Plan and upcoming steps in the draft document rollout.

This session is designed to share knowledge and encourage your active participation in shaping our community’s future. Don’t miss this opportunity to join the conversation! Register here.
